Now, I know that megapixels is not the only criteria to base the purchase of a digital camera on (see link on megapixels). Also, I notice that the newer Kodak digital cameras in this price range have gone back to 10 megapixels or less. However, I did get a camera with some nice features on it. One feature in particular is the on-camera cropping feature. Now I know that other digital cameras have on-camera cropping features. But not all the cameras' cropping features will also zoom the cropped picture.
For instance, I took this picture of my cat looking out the window (left). As you can see, the cat in the picture is rather small (4352 x 3264). He would not let me come closer to him because the flash would hurt his eyes. So I took this picture and made it into a close up by cropping it. The result was the picture on the right (1744 x 1312). Not only did it crop the picture for me, but it also zoomed the cropped picture.
Not all camera's in this price range would zoom the picture it cropped. The Cannon PC 1354 is a digital camera in the same price range. I found I could take a picture and crop it on-camera. However, when I cropped it, it did not zoom at all. In looking at the screen, it said in plain sight that the picture cannot be zoomed (at least it did not let me waste time trying to find out). In the picture on the left above the cat would still look just as far away, even though the picture was cropped. If you decided to use it, you would have to make the picture bigger to make it close up. Also, you would have to have a computer and software to do that. If you did not have a computer but planned on going straight to a printer, TV, or picture frame, you would not have this picture. If you did have a computer and if the size of the picture was small, you would have trouble placing it on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, without compromising the quality of the picture.
Different cameras focus on different features. But if they bother to put a crop feature in their camera, the makers should at least put in the best crop feature they can. Be sure to check out the crop feature of the camera you decide to buy if you think this is a feature you would want to use.
